Saya membayangkan seandainya ada orang bergamis masuk ke mall di jakarta. Apakah dikira FPI? Ha ha ha…Pengalaman kemarin waktu pulang ke indonesia, saya juga pakai gamis putih waktu ke surabaya mall dan dilihatin semua org.  Saya memang terbiasa memakai gamis putih di hari libur. Dan ketika di Indonesia, kan juga dalam rangka liburan.

Saya membayangkan jika para ada rombongan wanita berpakaian hitam + cadar masuk ke mall di indonesia. Mungkin dikira mau pengajiannya Laskar Jihad kali ya…Ha ha ha…Di arab, pemilik toko suka jika yg datang rombongan wanita bercadar. Karena biasanya mereka adalah org lokal UAE dan sukanya barang2 mahal. Yang murah nggak bakalan dilirik meskipun sebenarnya kualitasnya sama.

Bahasa indonesia ini penggunanya 250 juta dan belum termasuk pengguna bhs melayu di brunei, singapore, malaysia dan thailand selatan. Kalo ditotal mungkin bisa mencapai 300 juta pengguna bhs tsb. Eh sorry, jumlah tsb belum termasuk sebagian pendduk makkah dan madinah. Saya kaget juga ternyata mereka bisa lho. At least faham, lah. Ini krn jamaah haji indonesia adalah jamaah haji terbesar. Dan tentunya para penjual barang di makkah – madinah bisa berbhs indonesia krn sering kontak dg para jamaah atau para TKI di arab.

Uhmm, nggak enak saya bicara terlalu banyak ttg bhs ini krn bahasa indonesia saya cuman dapat 5 di EBTANAS SMA.

BAHASA ARAB

Menurut Islam, bahasa pertama di dunia adalah bahasa arab. Bhs arab juga merupakan golongan bhs semitik yg dimana bhs ibrani (bhs kaum yahudi) juga masuk di dalamnya. Sebagaimana bhs arab, bhs ibrani tidak mengenal huruf vokal dan juga ditulis dari kanan. Bahasa urdu (pakistan), persia (iran), dan pushto (pakistan – afghanistan) juga menggunakan huruf arab (huruf hijaiyyah) dalam penulisan tapi tidak termasuk kategori bhs semitik krn penggunaan tulisan arab hanya merupakan pengaruh literatur Islam sebagaimana aceh yg juga menggunakan huruf arab tetapi berbhs melayu/indonesia.

Menurut saya, bahasa Arab adalah bhs dg pengguna terbanyak di dunia. Mengapa? Krn faktor agama (Islam). Semua org arab (otal sekitar 225 juta yg terdiri dari negara2 liga arab) jelas bisa berbhs arab. Dan semua org Islam insya Allah pasti bisa baca Al Quran yg notabene berbhs Arab. Atau at least dia hafal surat al fatihah yg bebhs arab dan tahu sedikit2 artinya.

Bahasa arab adalah satu2 nya bhs di dunia yg mengguanakan sistem mizan (balance) dalam susunan kata kerjanya (fi’l). Misalnya kata: ka-ta-ba (he wrote). Kalau diubah sedikit artinya bisa berubah2 tapi artinya masih berkaitan, misal kaatib (writer), kitaab (book), kutub (books), yaktubu (he writes), kutiba (it is written), maktab (a place for writing/office) etc etc

Contoh2 kata serapan bhs arab di berbagai bhs di dunia misalnya kata “al burj” yg artinya gedung tinggi. “al Burj” juga masuk ke bhs prancis, yaitu “burjois” (org kaya krn mereka tinggal di kastil2 / gedung2 tinggi); ke bhs jerman, yaitu nama2 kota “nurenberg, hamburg, etc”. Bahkan “influenza” pun juga dari bhs arab “anfu” (hidung) dan “linza” (gangguan). Bagaimana dg bhs indonesia? Ada seorang ulama yg mengatakan bahwa kosakata bhs indonesia ini mengandung 30% bhs arab. Ini memang debatable, tapi lihatlah sebagian contoh kata berikut ini:
- musyawarah ==> bhs arab “musyawarah”
- kursi ==> bhs arab ” kursy”
- rakyat ==> bhs arab “ra’yun”
- khatulistiwa ==> bhs arab “khatu al-istiwa” atau kalo dibaca sambung ‘khatulistiwa”
- kimia ==> bhs arab “kimiya”
- ahli ==> bhs arab “ahli”
- hikmat / hikmah ==> bhs arab “ahli”
- wakil ==> bhs arab “wakiil” yg berasal dari kata “wakala”
- dewan ==> bhs arab “diwaan”
- syura ==> bhs arab “syura”
- mu’tamar, mu’tamirin, hadir, alkohol, kitab, ilmu, huruf, manfa’at, mufakat, fasih, terjemah, etc etc

Salah satu penyebab mendunianya bahasa arab adalah karena Khilafah Abbasiyah yg berpusat di Baghdad dan Khilafah Utsmaniyah yg berpusat di Andalusia-Spanyol ingin menterjemahkan ilmu2 yunani ke bhs arab. Disamping itu, luasnya wilayah kekuasaan Khilafah Islam (mulai maroko di afrika sampai maluku di indonesia; dan mulai afrika tengah sampai vienna-asutria + paris-prancis) menambah menjadikannya bhs arab sbg bahasa paling top kala itu.

Dulu, Baghdad dan Andalusia dikenal sbg kota pengetahuan di abad pertengahan. Semua pelajar di eropa berduyun2 mempelajari bsh arab dan kemudian sekolah di andalusia atau baghdad. Para mahasiswa abad pertengahan tsb mempelajari bhs arab bagikan mahasiswa jaman sekarang mempelajari bhs inggris agar bisa study abroad. Raja Frederick dari Jerman dikenal sbg satu2 nya raja di eropa yg lebih fasih bhs arab ketimbang bhs jerman. Intinya, ketika eropa masih dalam zaman kegelapan di abad pertengahan, dunia Islam berada di zaman penuh dengan cahaya ilmu pengetahuan. Hal ini diakui oleh para ahli di dunia barat yg mengatakan bahwa barat itu berhutang kpd dunia Islam.

BAHASA PRANCIS

Bahasa Prancis termasuk dalam gol. bahasa latin. Menguasai bhs Prancis, sedikit banyak dia akan tahu bhs italia, portugis, spanyol, dan rumania krn banyak kosakata yg relatif sama meskipun pengucapannya berbeda.

Dulu, bhs Prancis adalah bahasa eropa. Semua bangsa2 di eropa memakai bhs Prancis. Bahkan ratu inggris pun juga memakai bhs prancis. Terbukti dg banyaknya semboyan2 di eropa yg menggunakan bhs Prancis. Di Harian Inggris the Guardian dan Timesonline jga terdapat semboyan bhs Prancis (maaf saya lupa). Dikarenakan sejarah masa lalu yg hebat, maka bgs Prancis samai sekarang pun merasa enggan menggunakan bhs inggris. Di bandara internasional CDG Paris (Aeroport Charles de Gaule) hanya menggunakan bhs Prancis di board petunjuk jalan. Ketika saya berurusan dg pihak bank di Prancis, saya mencoba berbhs Inggris tapi jawaban mereka adalah, “Pas parlez Anglais!!” (Jangan
berbicara dlm bhs Inggris!!)

Prancis memang layak seperti itu krn mereka tidak butuh siapapun. Semua bangsa telah mengenal kualitias pendidikan, produk, budaya, profesionalitas, teknologi, etc Prancis. Meskipun begitu, sikap yg menurut saya arogan tsb tetap berefek thd bgs Prancis sendiri. Perusahaan minyak nasional Prancis TOTAL berada rating di bawah perusahaan minyak Shell-Belanda atau Schlumberger-Jerman adalah berawal dari penggunaan bahasa. Pendek kata, Total itu nggak mau berbhs Inggris. Lihat saja Total di Indonesia yg menamakan dirinya dg Total Indonésie dan bukan Total Indonesia.

Pernah ada cerita dari teman yg kerja di Total Paris. Suatu saat ada rapat internasional di kantor pusat Total di La defense-Paris. Hal pertama yg dibahas adalah bukan masalah perminyakan tetapi masalah bahasa. Pihak perwakilan Norwegia merasa ngak suka jika pihak Prancis menggunakan bhs Prancis. Mereka meminta agar pihak Prancis menggunakan bhs Inggris yg lebih umum digunakan. Tetapi pihak Prancis tetap ngotot berbhs Prancis. FYI, tingkat penggunaan bhs inggris di negara skandinavia (swedia, norway, denmark, finland) dan belanda sudah mencapai lebih dari 85%.

BAHASA INGGRIS

Tidak ada yg menggunakan bhs inggris di abad pertengahan kecuali para kriminal. Bahasa eropa waktu itu hanyalah Prancis dan bhs keduanya adalah latin atau italia. Tetapi waktu membuktikan lain. Setelah Perang Dunia 2, semua bangsa mengalami kekacauan, kecuali amerika. Para ilmuwan jerman yg terkenal hebat pun migrasi ke amerika yg dinilai sbg land of opportunity. Jadilah sedikit demi sedikit amerika menguasai dunia ini dan tentunya bhs amerika (inggris) pun ikut menguasai.

Seorg teman bilang, “english was born in UK, travelling to US, got sick in south Africa, and died in India”. India adalah negri persinggahan terakhir bagi bhs inggris. Dan memang mayoritas org india bisa berbhs inggris. Bhs Inggris pun boleh dikata sbg bhs nasional bagi india. Lho kok bukan bhs hindi? India itu negara besar. Dan seperti indonesia, tiap daerah punya bhs lokal. Dan nggak semua org bisa berbhs lokal. Bhs hindi memang punya pengguna yg besar di india tetapi ngak semua org india bisa ngomong hindi. Mereka mebih suka berbhs inggris jika ngomong dg org india yg lain suku. Tingkat kemahiran bhs inggris tentunya berbeda2. Semakin tinggi level pendidikan, semakin bagus pula. Di india dan pakistan, semua universitas menggunakan bhs inggris sbg bahasa pengantar. Ini mirip dg negri2 arab di afrika utara yg menggunakan bahasa prancis sbg bahasa pengantar di level universitas.

Bagi yg suka nonton film amrik pasti tahu banyak bhs slang di bhs inggris. Misalnya
1. wanna = want to
2. gonna = going to
3. gotta = got to = have to
4. kata2 yg berakhiran -ing dibah jadi -in’, misal: i’m lovin’ it
5. damn = very jika dihubungkan dg adverb/adjective, damn hot = very hot. (yg ini khusus bhs antar teman)
5. teman dari inggris menambahkan ==> BMW = be my wife.
6. dan masih banyak lagi terutama bhs nya anak2 remaja (teens) yg kalangan tua org native inggris pun juga bingung. Misalnya “z” utk menyebut “pizza”

Aksen inggris dan amrik itu beda. Saya sendiri prefer aksen inggris yg lebih berintonasi. Walaupun jujur saja, ketika pertama kali menginjakkan kaki di inggis saya agak kaget dg cara pengucapannya yg aneh krn memang dulunya saya terbiasa dg aksen amrik krn terlalu banyak nonton hollywood movies. Eh, mau tau bedanya 2 aksen tsb, silahkan mendengarkan radio BBC dan CNN yg online di internet. Nanti akan tahu bedanya.

YOU might think that $140 per barrel oil would be good for at least one part of the world, the Middle East. It’s too soon to tell for certain, but the region may well turn out to be the part of the world that suffers the most.

As painful as the current (or coming) oil-driven recession will be for Americans, it does seem to be convincing us to make the sacrifices necessary to diminish our reliance on oil. Over the long term, that could prove a huge boom for our economy, our environment and our national security.

In the Middle East, the situation may be reversed. Right now, the region is experiencing an economic boom, creating the opportunity to address the deep-seated political, economic and social problems that have spawned terrorist groups like Al Qaeda. That’s certainly what the people of the region hope.

The danger is that the way that the rising revenues are being spent will more likely worsen the region’s instability over time.

And that’s a problem, because problems in the Middle East have a bad habit of becoming big problems for the rest of the world. The Middle East isn’t Las Vegas: what happens there doesn’t stay there.

In the 1970s and ’80s, during the first great oil boom, the Middle Eastern producers largely squandered their wealth. Some did set up vast social-welfare networks that improved health care (an important reason for the explosive population growth of the past 30 years). But by and large they sent the money overseas, putting it in foreign real estate and Swiss bank accounts. This did nothing to develop (let alone diversify) their economies, and so when the boom turned to bust in the 1990s, economic problems mushroomed. With them came political discontent, terrorism and rebellion.

This time around, some Middle Eastern oil producers are trying to be smarter. They are investing billions of dollars at home, building industries, repairing roads and factories, and expanding social services. This has led regional elites and many in the international financial community to proclaim a new era in the Middle East — one in which the new oil revenues will diversify the region’s economies, create jobs for everyone, and make the Arab states the world’s economic superpower.

If this sounds unlikely, it’s because it almost certainly is. More oil money is being re-invested in the region, but it is not being spent where it is most needed. As a result, it is having little impact on what really matters, and is even creating problems.
The macroeconomics often do look great: gross domestic product, trade and foreign direct investment are all rising substantially. But unemployment and underemployment have declined very little and inflation is rising quickly. At a microeconomic level, critical problems belie the rosy picture painted by the superficial macro indicators.

In addition, much of the money is being re-invested in projects intended to produce quick profits for investors rather than long-term political and economic gains. A great deal of it is going into non-productive sectors like real estate and oil refining. Many of the factories being built with the new oil revenues will be heavily automated plants that will employ few people.

The industries that create lots of new jobs, like tourism, agriculture and construction, import workers from southern and southeastern Asia rather than hire locals. Similarly, the oil revenues are being used to expand educational systems but, with a few exceptions, not to reform them. Consequently, more students are being educated — and their expectations of a better life whetted — only to find out that they lack the skills to get the jobs they believe their schooling entitles them to. Across the region, youth unemployment averages at least 25 percent, close to double the global average.

Both the rise in energy prices and the flood of oil revenues have stoked inflation. Qatar’s current rate is 14 percent, up from 2.6 percent in the 2002-2004 period. As always, inflation hits the middle and lower classes hardest, and in many Arab states it is destroying the middle class, driving its members to the levels of the poor. That is pushing many into the arms of Islamist extremists seeking to overthrow the regimes.
The rise in global food prices has also hit the Middle East hard. Bread riots have convulsed Egypt and Yemen (not major oil producers, but two of the Arab world’s most populous states and cogs in the regional economy). In Saudi Arabia, fear of riots led the government to threaten to detain or confiscate the businesses of bakers and store owners who sell flour above the government-set subsidized price.

To combat the effects of inflation, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates have raised government salaries by 15 percent to 70 percent. In the short run this could help civil servants, but it also further increases inflation and does nothing to deal with the structural economic problems.

The foreign workers whom Arab states increasingly rely on because they tend to be cheaper and more productive than their own citizens are also beginning to show signs of unhappiness with their shoddy treatment. Foreign workers, who make up 80 percent to 95 percent of the private sector work forces in the small Persian Gulf states, have gone on strike in recent months in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to protest inflation, which is eroding their earnings. With foreigners making up roughly 40 percent of the population of the Arabian Peninsula, such labor unrest is ominous.

Meanwhile, the region’s rich have grown obscenely more wealthy through their ability to tap into the windfall oil profits, both legally and illegally. The wealthiest measure their wealth in the billions, while the poorest are so poor that growing numbers cannot even afford to marry.

Money pouring in but not trickling down tends to create a dangerous social imbalance. People hope their country’s oil windfall will alleviate their own economic problems only to find that vast sums are being siphoned off into graft; redirected out of the country to private accounts; spent on luxury items, military hardware or “white elephant” projects; or simply wasted.

It is worth keeping in mind the worst case from the history of the first Middle Eastern oil boom. Under Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Iran tried to use the influx of oil revenues after the 1973 oil-price increases to build new industries, eradicate unemployment, transform the economy and modernize society.

On paper, the shah’s efforts seemed superbly enlightened. As in the Arab states today, the macro indicators of Iranian progress — per capita gross domestic product, education expansion, foreign investment — seemed phenomenal. But the projects were mismanaged and riddled with graft. The royal cronies became fabulously wealthy while the plight of the average Iranian worsened because of protracted unemployment coupled with soaring inflation. Rather than solving Iran’s problems, the oil boom sparked the Iranian revolution.

A few in the region seem to be heeding that lesson. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia continues to demonstrate a keen grasp of what is in his country’s best long-term interests. He has poured money into economic cities that serve as “centers of excellence” to attract the kind of meaningful investment that, over time, could lift the Saudi labor force out of its dangerous doldrums. He is establishing the King Abdullah University, bringing in professors from all over the world to develop a curriculum emphasizing science, technology and innovation. But even here there is a dark lining: Abdullah is 83, and it is doubtful that his successors would continue such projects with the same progressive determination.

How can the region turn things around? For starters, those charged with managing its sovereign wealth funds and private investments need to shift from bankrolling capital-intensive industries that guarantee a high return for the investor to financing labor-intensive industries that could increase employment and develop a more capable work force.

At some level, this means thinking of regional investment as a form of deliberate wealth redistribution, social engineering and charity. It will certainly cut into the bottom lines during the short term, but if those who hold the purse strings are wise enough to do it, it should yield priceless political rewards in the years ahead — political rewards that are probably going to be necessary if they are to avoid being swept out of power by angry mobs.
Avoiding those kind of internal upheavals and eliminating much of the anger and despair upon which the terrorists and extremists prey would be a major boon to a world that is likely to remain addicted to Middle Eastern oil, and therefore vulnerable to its vicissitudes, for decades to come.

It’s pretty well known by now that the Internet, for all its world-flattening glory, is a destroyer of businesses without parallel. How many companies roared along for decades, minting money, only to see the Internet eat their business plans? We live in a media age and the media industry is Exhibit A in the murder trial. Newspapers, magazines, music, television, movies — all of the traditional models are dead or dying as bloodied moguls everywhere scramble to survive. But the Net has brutalized old-line business across most industries — retail, telecom, financial services — and the technology industry itself, is, ironically, no exception.

Few companies not born on the Web have figured out how to thrive there. (Apple, with its post-PC iPhone, could be the shining exception.) As Gates turns his attention full time to philanthropy, I wonder what will be left of the great company he founded, Microsoft, by the time Gates picks up a Nobel Prize for Peace. Clearly, a business with $26 billion in cash reserves isn’t exactly at death’s door. And Microsoft continues to be enormously profitable, thanks to its operating system monopoly. Thanks, that is, to Gates’s genius.

But big, complicated operating systems such as Microsoft’s latest, Vista, aren’t necessary in the Web Age, where applications are delivered for free and on demand — often without users’ even being aware of it. The Net is where the money is, and it’s the one place that Gates — like so many others — hasn’t left his mark.

He saw the Internet missile coming, of course. But by the time he sounded the alarm, it may have been too late. (Read his famous “Internet Tidal Wave” memo, sent to the troops May 26, 1995, over a year after the browser company known as Netscape launched.)

Gates was always more accustomed to being a disruptor than being disrupted. At the age of 25, he licensed a primitive operating system, PC-DOS, to IBM for $80,000 rather than sell it outright, a move that’s usually ranked as one of the Greatest Business Moves of All Time. Gates figured that many PC makers would copy IBM’s open architecture, and make their own PCs; they’d need to license an operating system, too. PC-DOS soon became MS-DOS, an operating system for all IBM clones, and Microsoft was on its way to becoming the one thing that billions of PCs around the world would have in common.

From 1980 until 1994, when Mosaic/Netscape emerged, Gates played a scratch game, parlaying his little “Micro- Soft” company into an empire that defined the PC Era. By opening up Windows to third-party developers, he created a platform that made many developers rich, and built out an ecosystem that put a desktop in almost every home.

But there is no greater blinder than success, even for a visionary like Bill Gates. By the time he realized the tech world was quickly shifting from PCs to the network that connected them, his moves were limited. A fiercely competitive man, he reached for the obvious lever, and attempted to tie the late-starter Internet Explorer browser to the monopoly he created, the Windows operating system. The move was mercilessly effective and beat back rival Netscape, which immediately saw its commanding share of the browser market disappear.

It was also illegal. With Netscape crying foul, the Feds successfully pressed an antitrust suit against Microsoft. The PR damage — Gates acting insolent on the witness stand, showing a convenient lack of memory about key business decisions — turned out to be short-lived and is all but forgotten as Gates remakes himself as a philanthropist. But the court’s decree forced the great general to march cautiously into the future. He may have won the Battle of the Browser, but he would start to see major casualties in the Internet War.

Gates built or bought all manner of things to conquer the Net, but few managed to be anything more than also-rans in the innovation game. In 1995, he launched a gated online service, MSN; a Web-based email client, Hotmail was purchased in 1997; a search engine, MSN Search, launched in 1998 using a third-party product as its core; a chat client, Messenger, was released in 1999; and last year it bought an online advertising platform, aQuantive and became a significant, though minority investor, in social network Facebook.

While Microsoft is exponentially larger than Google — number 44 on the Fortune 500 list versus Google at 150 — Google’s Web business (advertising mostly) is growing so fast, it’s poised to rival Redmond’s operating system revenues by 2010. And that’s the problem. As more and more of what Windows does moves up into the cloud — into Google’s always-on, give-’em-whatever-they-want-for-free servers — what becomes of the company that Gates built?

The smartest move Gates could make right now is to get out of the way. (Steve Ballmer should, too; pursuing Yahoo is a pretty good hint that his master plan for the Web is, like Gates’s was, to try to buy Microsoft’s way into the game.) There are many smart and talented people inside Microsoft who know what to do. (Blow up Vista and abandon its next iteration, Windows 7, and start from scratch, is but one excellent idea).
